Fats
Olive Oil
Although a diet high in fat is bad for us; a certain amount is essential to allow our bodies to function properly. There are two types of fats; saturated and unsaturated (polyunsaturated and monounsaturated). A diet high in saturated fat, such as that found in animal products like butter, cream and cheese and also some nuts, can lead to raised blood cholesterol a condition linked to heart disease. Vegetable fats tend to be unsaturated and these provide essential fatty acids required by the body.
Good vegetarian sources of unsaturated fat:
- Cold pressed vegetable oils: olive, sunflower, sesame, peanut, soybean, safflower and corn
- Nuts: macadamia, hazelnuts, pecans, almonds, brazil, walnuts
- Avocados
